Why WhatsApp keeps restricting business numbers, and how to avoid it

13 Oct, 2026

“My number got banned” is one of the most common messages we receive. Restrictions are rarely random. WhatsApp protects its users from spam, and a few habits trigger almost every restriction.

On the WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business apps

The apps are made for personal-scale chatting. Accounts are commonly banned or temporarily restricted for:

  • Unofficial or modified apps such as “GB WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp Plus”, and browser extensions or tools that automate sending. WhatsApp says these break its Terms of Service and can lead to temporary or permanent bans.
  • Bulk or automated messaging from a normal account, such as sending the same message to hundreds of people.
  • Messaging people who don’t know you, or adding them to groups without asking. Their reports and blocks count against you.

If you need to message many customers, the official WhatsApp Business API is the right tool, not an unofficial sender.

On the WhatsApp Business API

The API has clear, gradual controls instead of sudden bans.

Messaging limits. Meta limits how many people your business can message first (outside a customer’s 24-hour window) in a rolling 24 hours. New business portfolios start at 250. Verify your business, or deliver high-quality messages to 2,000 people within 30 days, to reach 2,000. After that, the limit can rise to 10,000, 100,000 and unlimited when you use at least half of it with good quality. Limits are shared across all numbers in your business portfolio, and replies inside an open 24-hour window don’t count.

Quality. When people block or report your messages, quality drops. Low quality stops your limit from growing, and templates that collect complaints or are rarely read can be paused or disabled.

Policy enforcement. For repeated violations, such as spam, the wrong template category or a prohibited business type, Meta starts with a warning, then blocks templates for 1 or 3 days, then blocks all messages for 5, 7 or 30 days, then locks the account. Severe harms, such as scams, lead to immediate removal. Violations and appeals are in Business Support Home in Meta Business Suite; reviews usually take 24 to 48 hours.

Per-user marketing limits. WhatsApp may also limit how many marketing messages one person receives from businesses, based on how much they engage. Those messages fail with error 131049. Wait at least 24 hours before trying that customer again; retrying quickly makes it worse.

Habits that keep your number safe

  • Message only people who agreed to hear from you, and make opting out easy. WhatsRay handles STOP and START automatically.
  • Use the right template category, and keep marketing relevant and occasional.
  • Grow volume gradually instead of sending to your whole list on day one.
  • Verify your business in Meta Business Suite.
  • Check that your business is allowed: dating, gambling, crypto, lending, alcohol and other restricted categories can’t use the platform.
  • Never use unofficial WhatsApp apps or automation tools on a number you care about.

If you are already restricted

On the API, read the violation in Business Support Home, fix the cause and request a review if you believe it is a mistake. Some spam restrictions can’t be appealed and you must wait for them to end. On the app, follow the steps in the WhatsApp Help Center and stop using any unofficial app before you register again.

Meta updates these rules regularly, so check Meta’s documentation for the latest limits.
